Welcome
Hello everyone, this is Vincent Tseng, the Wandering Warrior, and I welcome you to the 基本長拳 Essential Long Boxing online course. This online course is designed to give you a high level overview on the core mechanics, vital concepts and strategic doctrine of the Long Boxing or Long Fist art, and details on some of the most common techniques. It seeks to present a generalized breakdown of a way or system rather than a particular style's approach.
Gather some partners, preferably at least one of similar size to you, and follow along with each lesson. We begin with Chinese Boxing fundamentals, teaching you how to stand and move, how to produce power, and then a variety of striking, distance management and the overall strategic doctrine of Long Boxing. Adding to this I will also introduce essential kicking, kick defense, throwing, and handwork. While the 18 lessons are intended to go in order, you can skip around as you see fit. Repeat and go back to previous ones as much as needed. Technical checks and Practice tips are provided in each Section for you to double check your form - feel free to video record yourself to review. I strongly advise you all get groin protectors and mouth guards. If you so desire, you may want to get MMA gloves, shin pads, and light sparring helmets. Remember, you and your partners are responsible for one another’s improvement and prevention of injury!
The efficacy of traditional Chinese Boxing has been declining, and it is my hope that I can help change things for the better. Unlike other courses out there, this is not an encyclopedia of techniques nor Taolu or forms / sequences, it isn’t athletic training, nor is it fight coaching. I offer such things, but not here. Being one of the most expansive martial families of Chinese Boxing, I have distilled and dissected 長拳 Cháng quán, Long fist or long boxing, and broken down its combat language for you so you can use these building blocks to become fully fluent via this online course.
Thank you for choosing to embark on this journey, do not hesitate to reach out for 1:1 coaching, and remember to be respectful and respectable to one another as you train!
Sincerely,
Vincent Tseng, The Wandering Warrior
